D.M. LeFever 10 Gauge Double Barrel Shotgun
05 April 2020
Description

10 Gauge double barrel shot gun. 30 inch barrels. Built by Daniel M. LeFever in Auburn, NY. I believe that the gun was manufactured in the 1860's as LeFever moved to Syracuse, NY around 1870. The gun is in poor condition as there are some slight lifting on the barrels a couple of cracks in the wood.

Provenance

The gun was purchased used by my Dad and his brother Russell in the 1930's when they were teenagers living in the Ithica, NY area. They both went off to WWII and my uncle did not return. It had been in my Dad's possession ever since until he passed it on to me about 20 years ago.

What does this mean?

Dear Russel,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a double-barrel shotgun with a length of 30 inches. The gun has a nut wood stock and the barrel is marked by "D. M. LeFever Aubrun NY". This gun was made by Daniel Myron Lefever (1835-1906) in the late 1860s after his partnership with James Ellis broke off 1867 and before he funded Dangerfield & Lefever in 1872/1873. He moved 1869 to Auburn which closes the possible timeframe.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 250 to 500 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg
