Georg did an excellent job on my last manuscript. I thought I’d try another. This page is another single page bought in France in the 20’s. It is on thin sheep skin (vellum). The page illustrated is illustrated on both sides and is roughly 8x10. It also has a leather page turner that is still attached and in good condition as is the page itself. I hope I have included enough photos.
Inherited from a relative who had also inherited from another relative. I received several manuscripts and a note was included that said it was bought in France in the 20’s.
Thank you for the additional images and your patience. The presented object is an illuminated manuscript or Missale of the style of the 14th or more likely of the 15th century. The vellum shows beside the texts and the notes on both sides images. On one side we see a saint in an incunable holding a banner. On the other side we see the scene of the Ascension of Jesus Christ and in the lower region, two knights fighting. Especially the Ascension scene seems to be restored. The details and the surface of the illustration seem too laminar and fresh in the colors. Also, there is the sneaky suspicion that this illustration is a later reproduction of the late 19th or 20th century. Sadly this can´t be verified or falsified on the base of images.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 100 to 200 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
