Wood Oriental Screen
22 March 2019
Description

This is made out of some type of wood (I’m not sure which but it’s heavy and solid). There are gold hinges connecting the 4 panels but I suspect those were replaced at some point because they look too new. I can’t find any markings on this screen that would indicate provenance but it’s so ornate that they might just be hard to find. My great-great grandfather brought it (and another screen) back from China where he served in the Navy. As I’ve said it is 4 panels -84 inches wide and 73 inches tall. One side depicts carved and painted scenes while the back is black with painted gold flowers.

Provenance

I inherited from my grandmother who got it from her Mother. I believe it was either my great-great grandmother’s husband or my great grandmother’s husband that brought it back from China where he was serving in the Navy. I don’t really have much information about it other than that but I may be able to drum some up if I really squeeze my aunt to remember. *I found the obituary for my great-grandfather and added it to this listing.

What does this mean?

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a chinese lacquer folding screen dating to the republic period, early 20th century. The relief like cutouts are an unusal feature, but the battle scenes with famous generals can be found on many decorative items, they are part of chinese folk culture. The hinges with the modern screws appear to be later replacements. The estimate is based on similar items sold at auction. The supply of chinese lacquer screens is on a high level, demand is low. This might change in the future. There is no measurement for the the sentimental value you might attach to the item.
