Vintage German dolls
12 February 2020
Description

One doll is 10 1/2” tall and other is 15”. Both have bisque heads, arms and feet, glued on mohair wigs and apparent original clothes. Smaller one has “germany” and the number 70 on back; larger one has no marks I can find.

Provenance

An elderly friend of mine has asked me to try to sell these two dolls for her. The doll in blue is 10 1/2" tall and the one in off-white is 15". The dolls belonged to my friend's mother, who was given them by her older sister in 1912 while living in rural Pennsylvania. My friend's mother was six years old at that time. The dolls appear not to have been played with extensively, and the clothing appears to be original. The hair on both appears to be glued on mohair. The smaller doll has "germany" (with lower case "g") and the number 70 on her back. I can find no mark of any kind on the larger doll.

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

It is two beautiful dolls. Such antique dolls are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
The doll in the blue dress has a head made of porcelain and is the type of doll that is most sought after of the two dolls. The other dolls head is probably made of some kind of clay/ceramic where damp has gotten under the glazing giving the doll the 'freckles'. Both dolls are cute, however the market for dolls has decreased within the last decades making the prices drop. Today the dolls that sell for high prices are character dolls with significant expressions moulded after children in the early 1900s.
To collectors it is very important that the dolls are in good conditon without any damages, hairlines or chips to the heads. And if possible as original with regards to wig, clothes and shoes as possible.
The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online antique toys auction, where I believe the dolls has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the dolls. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary. The price is for the 2 dolls sold together.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’m happy to help.
Thank you
