This I believe is an old master painting. The frame is 17th century Dutch tortoiseshell. It has seals on back and says John Bradshaw with dates and by R Walker. There was a photo with painting with a poem partly in back by Southey regarding Henry Ireton about him being imprisoned at Chepstow Castle. The painting is on wood and is 11 x 13 inches out of the frame.
We are descendants of Judge John Bradshaw and this was left to me by my uncle. My grandfather got it from Marple Hall where Judge Bradshaw lived at one point. We believe this is either him or relative to someone in parliament at that time?

Based on the notation mentioned, this is an original oil painting on board of John Bradshaw (1602 – 1659) an English Judge and that the painting was likely done by British portrait painter, Robert Walker (1607 - 1658). It is a bit unusual for an English subject portrait painting by a British artist to be housed in a Dutch ripple frame, nevertheless, that is what the framing is. This image does bear a resemblance to a younger Bradshaw when viewed against known images of him. Technically, this is not an Old Master painting, as that designation is reserved for more well-known names such as Rembrandt, Van Dyke, Rubens, etc. It is preferred when the sitter and author of portrait paintings of this age are known, and that is a plus here. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
