What does this mean?

The appraised work appears to be a lithograph executed by Russian-French artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985) in 1956. The print is signed at lower right and editioned (44/75) at lower left. The image features an abstracted, stylized figure in profile with the print’s title, ‘Les Prophètes’ below. Chagall was long influenced by religion, and he made an important trip to the Holy Land in 1931. Spiritually and creatively inspired by his travels, from 1931-39 he created a series of images that feature figures and subject matter from the Christian holy book. The artist returned to the series twenty-five years later, from 1952-56. It’s possible the subject work is a preparatory composition for what would become 24 color lithographs of biblical scenes that was published in Paris from 1958-60. The estimate provided is based on comparables offered and sold at auction. In the last ten years, only three ‘Les Prophètes’ prints have appeared at auction. The results overall were inconsistent—two failed to find buyers while the third sold above it’s high presale estimate. Chagall continues to be an in-demand artist and his market’s peak was in 2017. While overall sales have declined since then, the artist’s total sales remain high, suggesting a stable market. The subject work’s size, condition, and Chagall’s current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
