Claude Monet French 1840 - 1926 Oil on Canvas Painting in the style of.Renoir/Manet/Pissarro Era.
26 March 2024
Description

Untitled/uncatalogued coast scene oil on canvas painting. Origin is unknown and contains signature of Claude Monet. However, after further research, this appears to be a much darker replication of Monet's La Jetée de Fécamp par gros temps. Received via online auction house. Displays no indications of tears or damage and reported to be in great condition. However, after arrival, I can see where the frame has been glued back together in some places. While I highly doubt it has the value of an actual Monet, I was hoping it was at least worth a little more than I paid for it.

Hello E.K.

Thank you very much for submitting your item for an appraisal. Can you please tell me more about where you purchased it and how it was attributed by the online auction house? Paintings like this are tricky because with the presence of the signature at the bottom right, this can indicate an intention to deceive, which would mean that the painting is a forgery and has no market value. Some galleries and auction houses try to get around this by attributing the work "in the style of" the signed artist and covering themselves with a limitation of liability in their terms of sale, which is what I assume was done in your case.

In the best case scenario, the artwork that you purchased is worth what you paid for it, but if you wish to resell it, you need to be very careful not to imply that it's an original or you may face financial and / or legal repercussions.

If you have any questions or would like to provide some additional information about your transaction that I can review and see if you would be entitled to a refund, please let me know in the comments section below.

Thank you!

Kind regards,
Anne

Thanks for the update. Indeed this is not an original Monet work. I searched Google images and came up with the following: La Jetee de Fecamp par Gros Temps. This is the original piece by Monet.

I wasn't provided much information. I was expecting to receive at least some documentation but nothing was sent. I'm in the process of contacting them and the web host for more information. I bought this through liveauctioneers.com from "international art auction gallery". The full listing can be found here: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/en-gb/item/173552273_claude-monet-french-1840-1926-oil-on-canvas-painting-in-the-style-ofrenoirmanetpissarro-era

I do feel this was a bit deceptive and they did exactly what you mentioned. All of their pieces are like this. Otherwise, I have no intention of selling it as an original Monet but rather an unknown artist's interpretation. If not, I'm hanging this up in my house and entitling this piece "lessons learned".

Let me know if I can of further assistance.

Thanks,

Hello!

Thank you for this information and my apologies for the delayed response.

I've reviewed the listing and I do find it to be quite deceptive. The seller writes explicitly in the description "The artwork is created in the artistic style reminiscent of Monet," and also... "It's crucial to understand that all items in this catalog are sold in the artistic style of the original creator, in accordance with the Platform sale rules. "In the artist's style" indicates that the piece is not listed in the artist's documented catalog, and it may have been painted by the artist or someone else inspired by the artist's style."

However, their pre-sale estimate of $35,000-$45,000 is exorbitantly high for a work that is "in the style of" the artist in question. If you haven't already, I would write to liveauctioneers and let them know that you have some concerns about the manner in which this seller does business. I see that they've already gotten quite a few negative reviews. Perhaps you will be able to get a refund for the piece.

If there's anything else that I can do to help, please let me know!

Kind regards,
Anne
