1917 Japanese calligraphy scroll
Hi Good Morning I have an old Japanese calligraphy scroll that was passed down from my family. It is written by the five major royal families formed in the Kamakura period. The five families are Kono’e,Kujo, Nijo, Ichijo, and Takatsukasa. These are from the five regent houses of the Fujiwara clan. I am looking to sell this piece but unfortunately I cannot find someone to appraise it because of its age. Are you able to give me approximate value of this piece? The item presented appears to be 19th century calligraphy scroll featuring short poems by various Japanese court nobles. Thank you so much for the screenshots of the translations. They were extremely helpful. Unfortunately, the nobles do not com up in any auction records. Therefore I cannot appraise the item based on artist or poet attribution. However, I can appraise based on age, object, subject matter, and the market trends.
The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of comparable 19th century hanging scrolls featuring calligraphy poems by various artists and poets. The large range is due to the records including a variety of artist attributions. Some highly regarded artists will perform better at auction than others and I did not want to rule out the possible importance and regard for these court nobles.
