What does this mean?

Dear John,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a pitcher made by the manufacturer Zsolnay in Petch in Hungary. The jug or pitcher is decorated with a Chinese dragon and painted with flower decor. Usually, this pitcher was decorated with an iridescent glaze or other colors without a detailed painted decor. Sadly this "traditional" decor makes this pitcher not that interesting for collectors in comparison to the famous eosin glaze which Zsolnay is famous for.
Artworks of this artist were recently offered and sold on the international and national auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 350 to 700 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

I had a reputable local collector advise me that my pitcher is rare, and worth $5000 to $7000. Why are the appraisals so far apart?

Dear John,

we adapt our estimated to actual reached auction prices via databases that collect all results all over the world. The form of this pitcher is not that rare and from time to time on the market. As mentioned the decor makes this piece not that interesting for the collectors because the most famous decor of Zolnay is the Eosin decor. But there were Esoin decorated pitchers sold for 1500 USD. The price rank of 5.000 to 7.000 USD is very optimistic and not adapted to the actual market situation.

With kind regards,
Georg
