Tall Sea captains chest- English Walnut
Overall dimensions: width 86 3/4”, depth 21 1/2”, height 80”. See attached drawings. It breaks down into eight pieces for loading onto a ship: 2 sections with drawers, 2 side compartments and a base and 3 crown pieces. The doors and drawers are made of English Walnut with a burl or flame pattern.
We do not know the provenance. We purchased it in the mid seventies. We were told that it was a captains chest used on a tall ship.

The presented object is a cabinet in the tradition of the so-called Captain's Chest with the measurements of width 86 3/4”, depth 21 1/2”, height 80”. This piece was made out of walnut wood and has a label of the company Edward Parkhouse in Plymouth. This piece was made in the late 19th century.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 1.000 to 2.000 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

We purchased wholesale from various established European pickers for many years and the Captain was purchased over 30 years ago. We were shocked to receive your current value of the Captain. We purchased it wholesale for over $15,000 years ago. We have a good friend, a merchant marine Captain which has sailed for over 35 years and has toured most tall ships around the world over his many years at sea. In a resent visit to our home, I showed him the Captain since he has collected many Nautical antique items. He said the Captain was priceless and I should have it appraised. We really were looking for some real Nautical comps due to wanting to down size to a smaller home. We would really appreciate some real comps,

Thank you for your email and your feedback. Sadly we face this problem often that customers expect much higher values or bought their objects decades ago for higher prices. Sadly the auction market for antique furniture is shrinking at the moment and this explains sadly very low estimates. Just extraordinary pieces and furniture which are connected to a person like a provenance or a carpenter reach still high prices. This is a market development which we have to mirror in our estimates.
