This is a pair of antique, late 19th century, about 1885 - 1890, late Meiji Period, Victorian era, 28cm tall vases from Japan. They are a ceramic clay or soft-paste pottery, not porcelain. The surface decoration of a temple ceremony, is done in hand applied raised enamel, which is known as 'moriage' and the faces are hand painted. These were generally made as decorative export ware.
