Lamps of Belgium
27 February 2019
Description

A matching pair of glass (porcelain?) lamps supposedly from 1800’s ? The lamps are approximately 15” tall from the base to the bottom of the lightbulb socket. At the widest point of the two handles they are approximately 9 1/2” wide. The body is approximately 7 1/2” in diameter. At some point while my grandmother still had them the electrical bulb socket and power cord were upgraded. Possibly when she came from Europe to the USA. I replaced the lamp shades years ago as the original shades were literally falling apart.

Dear Mike,
Many thanks for sending the dimensions and additional information.

The appraised work is a pair of 19th century lusterware burgundy porcelain lamps signed “Fragonard M. Langbroek Amsterdam.” Both lamps feature a hand-painted figural scene with three musicians playing music in a garden-type landscape. The image is whimsical and reminiscent of typical fête galante scenes popular during the Rococo period in France. The figural scene is framed within a beaded border with remnants of gold paint, which is also visible on the handles and lamp base. However, it should be noted that based on the images provided, there appears to be extensive paint wear on the handles, border, top and base of the lamp(s).

The estimate provided is based on comparable examples recently offered and sold at auction. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
