What does this mean?

Hi Michael,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The term 'gul' (misspelled in the appraisal) is an octagonal motif, usually elongated and divided into four. The word means "rose or flower". Also, note that the appraised value in 1993 was for insurance; Mearto assesses for fair-market / auction purposes, which are less than insurance values.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A modern hand-knotted silk Persian double-gul Bokkhara mat
20th Century
in shades of blue, brown and cream, with an Arabic cartouche at one end
approximately 3 by 5 feet
PROVENANCE: inherited'
$300-500*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail, insurance or asking price may vary.
