Bailly l'ainé- napoléon clock
24 June 2021
Description

The clock is approximately 32" in height, base is approximately 14" diameter I think it is made of bronze or brass, guessing it weighs around 50-75 lbs and I believe gold plated. The dial, porcelain I think. appears to have had some repairs completed sometime in the past. I don't have the key so can't wind it but I know it was working five years ago and have no reason to believe it still doesn't work if wound.

Provenance

My Grandfather obtained this clock in the late 1930's and family folklore claims that it was one of three similar clocks that Napoleon gave to Josephine. Based on some old newspaper articles in our possession it was originally brought to the USA in the early 1800's by a Southern Plantation Owner. I’ve been in contact with two museums in France, Marc Desti of National Museum of the Castle of Compiegne and Alain Pougetoux Château de Malmaison (who put me in contact with Marc) they seem to believe it is one of the three made. Translated excerpts from an email I received from Marc. “The clock your family is in possession of since past generations about which you are writing to my Colleague of Malmaison, Alain Pougetoux, is very interesting. This is an example practically identical (except for a few details) to the one that disappeared from the bedroom of the Empathic Mari-Louise in Compiegne. This room no longer exist. We sadly had to deplore a robbery in 1998 (like other museums at the time) and since then the clock has not reappeared. The clock has been made by Bailly in Paris, like almost all the other clocks in the Palace from the first Empire. We would be very happy the see it if the occasion would arise for one of our Compiegne curators to be able to go to the United States. Your family must be very attached to that object but if you would consider one day parting with it, we are asking please let us know? This would be a marvelous opportunity to replace an important work.” It's been sitting on the table in the attached picture since the early 1970's so I absolutely know it isn't the clock Marc mentions. . .
