Hello Eric, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, material and the signes on it, I concluded that this is an Antique Brazilian Military Sword made in Rio de Janeiro. This piece dates backto the period between 1902-1915. This piece is not French but rather Brasilian, the stamped initials of "AGRJ" means "Arsenal de Guerra in Rio de Janeiro" which is the Brasilian Republic's stamp from the Arsenal in Rio de Janeiro. This name and mark was only used after 1902, since the arsenal was moved to a new site and was named as Arsenal de Guerra in Rio de Janeiro. The "216" writing is the serial number of the piece. The blade is made of steel and it is in "Yataghan" blade shape. "S" shaped steel guard with a ribbed cast brass grip is visible on the composition. There are six "X" marks on the piece, likely scratched by one of it's previous owners. It normally should have a scabbard. The piece is in good condition with signes of use and age, lost scabbard. Likely pre-WWI. Steel Brazilian Sword. Dimensions: 22 Inches Long. Condition: The piece is in good condition with signes of use and age, lost scabbard. Provenance: Auction House. 100-150$.
