Three piece vase set

I am not sure I can add much more than what the pictures will show. My great grandmother was a Christian missionary in China for decades, upon her return sometime around 1900 she brought back many items which filtered down through the generations.

Hello John, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, painting quality and the marks, I concluded that this is a Japanese Satsuma Trio Wisteria Vases from the Meiji Period. The Trio dates back to the period between 1900-1910, likely circa 1900. This Wisteria pattern vases were decorated with different flowers and plants but might generally be categorized as Wisteria, since this was one of the most famous and popular scenes at the time. Meiji period was marked as the modernizing period of Japan and a time of partial integration with West in terms of finance and commerce. We can easily detect the certain taste and style in terms of paintings on these pieces. The floral patterns are partly in European style. The cylindrical shape is also not very often seen in classical Japanese pieces. The marks under the pieces reflects clearly the Satsuma style mark with a dark brown base and a golden writing applied on it with a golden frame. The large vase depicts Sakura trees and cherry blossoms while the smaller ones depicts Wisterias and Sycamore tree. Glaze cracks are visible on each piece due to age. The painting quality of the pieces is considerably well and the precision is quite high. All there pieces have decorative borders with gilt pattern on their rims and their bases. The pieces are in very good condition with minimal signes of use and age. Entirely hand painted. Dimensions: Largest vase is approximately 9.5 Inches High. Condition: The pieces are in very good condition with minimal signes of use and age. Provenance: Current owner's great grandmother was a Christian Missionary in China and she brought back a lot of artifacts uon her return in around 1900. Heavily decorated by floral Meiji Era patterns. 1000-1500$ for the lot. Please don’t hesitate to reach us again for more online appraisals on your precious items, thank you for choosing Mearto.
