I have a 4'7"x 3'5" hand knotted, wool oriental rug. the wool is soft an smooth as you rub it with the grain, and rug is in overall good condition. There is wear to the fringe and a small wear spot on the body and one to long edge. I purchased the rug from a lady living in a retirement village in Endicott NY. She said the rug had been a gift from a now deceased friend in Manhattan, NY. She stated the rug had been in her friends Manhattan apartment for as long as she could remember.

Hello Laurie, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Persian Malayer Rug, Malayer Rugs originate from Malayer, located in the southwestern area of the Hamadan Province in western Iran. This piece dates back to the period between 1925-1940. The Malayer rugs are single wefted – also called “Sennah Baft” or Hamadan weave – meaning that there is only one shot of weft between each row of knots. Malayer pieces are usually known to have grape of grape inspired motifs on them. As you can see from your piece, in this case the flowers were aligned like a grape bunch. Malayer pieces are considered as sem-tribal rugs. Therefore the knot density is not as high as Isfahan or Tebriz pieces. Although some 19th century pieces have very high knot counts we can observe that your piece has a low knot count which affects the rendering of the motifs. With a lower knot count the motifs will be rendered somewhat muddy in comparison to pieces with higher knot densities. As many of the Malayer pieces your's have a central decoration to it. A central medallion is visible but not as lavishly designed as other centrally decorated Persian Rugs. We can observe 7 different borders, 4 thin and 3 wide ones. These borders are also decorated florally. Overall, the carpet gives you the feel that this was a flower vase. In good condition for almost a hundred years. With some signes of age and use, loosenings on the fringes. Knotted wool on wool. Both the warp and the pile is probably made of hand loomed wool. Entirely hand knotted.
