Savonarola chair

The upholstery is not original (was replaced with needle point in the 40s or 50s, updated to green velvet this year). Casters are metal and do not appear to be original as there are additional holes - see photo. The seat itself is original, stuffed with burlap, horse hair?, straw? See photo

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is: An antique Renaissance Revival style carved oak Savonarola armchair American or English, late 19th Century The arched back with stylized foliate relief carving, flat-oriented scrolling arm, the curule-form frame fitted with an upholstered sprung seat with horsehair and burlap, over a stylized foliate carved boss, raised on casters. 39 inches tall, 27 inches wide, 24 inches deep CONDITION: seems to retain its original seat; now with a green velvet upholstery over a later needlepoint cover. PROVENANCE: inherited, thence by gift $200-300* *represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
