Hello Deborah, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Turkish Rug made in Istanbul. The piece dates back to the period from 1990 to 2020. The piece is quite contemporary and knotted with Symmetrical Turkish Knots. The piece does not represent a specific ecole of rug knotting since it is a contemporary piece from an independent atelier but based on the design and quality we can say that the artist tried to imitate the Imperial Hereke Rugs of the Ottoman Empire and later the Hereke Rugs of the Turkish Republic. The piece is centrally decorated with a pale Turquoise sphere and the sphere is decorated with a symmetrical double bird motif. The piece is quite heavily decorated with floral motifs, as you can see from the rendering of the motifs, the Turkish Knot Technique requires double knot at a single weave. Hence the circular motifs appear less fluid. The piece is likely knotted wool on cotton but if you could provide closer pictures I could evaluate wether it also contains silk material or not. The piece'scentral area is decorated on an Ivory base, while the borders were decorated on a black base. The vase motif on the lower part of the piece tells us that the piece represents a high level of prestige as vase was a noble item in the weaving tradition. The piece is perfectly symmetrical which shows the high level of craftsmanship on iy. The piece's knot quality is quite high. The peice is in good condition without any visible problems. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: 6 Feet by 4 Feet Condition: The peice is in good condition without any visible problems. Provenance: Purchased in Istanbul.
