Hello Jack, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Chinese Rug. The piece likely dates back to the period from 1950 to 1980. The piece is classically decorated with Chinese patterns on corners. The Chinese ateliers started producing oriental styled rugs with oriental styled knots and patterns. Although some rugs were decorated orientally this piece was decorated mostly with motifs from classical Chinese art. The piece was bicoloured and was only executed by use of two colours. These are both natural tones, the base of the piece is coloured in an ivory tone while the motifs were coloured with a grey-brown colour. The piece's motifs include floral motifs with bamboos and grape leaves as well as geometrical traditional motifs. The piece is knotted wool on cotton. The knot density of the piece is typical to this period. The piece is in good condition without visible problems, appears to be dirty. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: 9 Feet by 11 Feet Condition: The piece is in good condition without visible problems, appears to be dirty. Provenance: Purchased by the current owner's grandfather from China.
