Hello Michele, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Turkman Style Rug made in Irans. The piece is a Persian made rug. The piece dates back to the period from 1960 to 1990. The piece was designed as a runner rug, it was designed to be used on corridors and narrow spaces on the floor. The piece was decorated with classical Turkman Bukhara patterns and border decorations as well as hanging and lanterns which decorates the central area of this piece. The piece's central area was decorated on a dark red coloured base while the borders of the piece was decorated on a black base. The piece was knotted wool on cotton. The piece has semi medallions along central area's each edge. Most important part of the piece is it's signature, the piece was signed by it's artist. The signature is knotted on the lower middle area which means the piece was knotted to be used on the floor instead of being used on the wall. The signature says “Baft Balal" in Persian, which translates to "Sown by Balal". The artist of the piece was named Balal. Wool quality of the piece appears to be low. The knot density of the piece is average as well and the motifs were rendered somewhat muddy. The piece is in good condition without visible problems. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: 24 Inches by 76 Inches Condition: The piece is in good condition without visible problems. Provenance: Previously owned by Anita Norman of San Diego .
