Hello Michele, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Indian Made Oriental Rug. The piece dates back to the period from 1960 to 1980. The piece was made in style of Caucasian Rugs or Turkish-Caucasian Rugs with perpedil style knotting. The piece was centrally decorated with chest medallions and a smaller white chest as the central medallion. The piece is entirely floral in decoration with frequent use of ram horn motifs as well as geometrically constructed traditional motifs. Turkish and Caucasian rugs were decorated traditionally with more geometrical and cornered motifs since the Turkish Symmetrical Knot type does limit the capacity of making curves and circular motifs to some extend. The piece's central area was knotted on a blue base while the borders of the piece were knotted on white, red and blue bases. Borders were decorated with simplified versins of classical Persian Leaf and Flower pattern. At each end of the rug body the weaver have switched to a different weaving referred as "kilim" and created small kilim borders on edges before fringe. This is also usual to Turkish-Caucasian pieces. This was designed to smoothen the transition between fringes and the rug body. The piece was knotted wool on cotton. The piece's knot density appears to be average for a piece like this and the motifs were rendered clearly. The piece is in good condition with small signes of use and age. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: 60 Inches by 36 Inches Condition: The piece is in good condition with small signes of use and age. Provenance: Previously owned by Anita Norman of San Diego. . Heavily decorated by traditional Turko-Caucasian patterns. 300-500$. Please don’t hesitate to reach us again for more online appraisals on your precious items, thank you for choosing Mearto.
