Red Sox bobblehead

It is a Red Sox bobblehead doll from the 40s or 50s. It is missing the spring that made his head bobble. It appears to be made of something like plaster of Paris. (That's what we caked it when I was a kid - not sure what the real name of it is).

Hi Melissa, Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. It's hard to tell from the photos but I'm wondering if this could be paper mache or chalkware - bobbleheads / nodders were made from that during the 1940s-50s before plastic became the medium of choice. Unfortunately, the lack of the spring mechanism that gives these their name will, I'm afraid, negatively impact its fair-market (auction) value. If this were in pristine and all-original condition, it would have a value closer to $100-150. Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is: A vintage Boston Red Sox chalkware or paper mache nodder made in Japan, mid 20th Century The polychromed figure wearing a blue cap, white uniform with blue sleeves and red sox, on a square light green base. approximately 4 inches tall CONDITION: with surfaces losses and missing the nodding mechanism PROVENANCE: inherited $20-30* *represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
