Rangda Balinese Mask with Horse Hair

This is a Rangda mask from Bali, originally purchased in California in 1985. This mask has the original horse hair, mirrored tongue, and painted details. It’s in good shape, though it is old!

Dimensions

The horse hair makes it long- about 40 inches, I’d estimate.

Dear Sienna, Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry, once again. Based on images and available information, this item is: A remarkable Rangda Balinese Mask from 1980s, with horse hair. The Rangda (widow in Balinese) mask is intended to resemble a wife's soul when she follows her departed husband to the netherworld. Unlike the Barong, which represents the good, Rangda personifies the dark side of the universe. The mask is hand-carved, painted with natural pigments and decorated with coconut fibre and other organic materials as well as gold leaf. Very good condition. Retail prices may vary
