Hello Don, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is a Machine Made Decorative Wall Rug. The Wall Rugs were very famous in Iran and also all over the world strating from the 1950's. They slowly lost their fame and rarely exhibited now excluding hand knotted or antique pieces. Based on the back and the knots as well as the composition this is machine made and not han knotted. Therefore this was likely a mass produced item. The piece likely dates back to the period between 1955-1975. The piece might havve Persian origins but not necessarily because on one of the pattern we can see a women figure holding a flag with a crescent moon on it. This motif is usually associated with Turkish origins but the Mosque on the back of the composition is not in Ottoman style but rather in Persian style. The faces and the clothing of the poeple appears to be more Ottoman than Persian. So this piece is quite electic and it also might have been produced neither of these countries. It might have been produced in China, where this sort of Oriental Pieces were made to get a market share in 1970's. Since the piece is not made with hand or with a specific technique it is possible to be sure of the origin. Pseudo writings on sides makes me think more of Turkey or China because in Iran the alphabet is not Latin and they would not imitate a pseudo-Arabic writing. The piece reflects a court scene from a palace of a governor likely. A merchant is presenting someone to the powerful figure of the piece. While we can see some other people on top of the composition as well as some servants on the lower right. The piece is very detailed with architectural elements and decorative patterns. The piece is in good conditions without any problems. Wall Hanging. Dimensions: 50 Inches by 69 Inches. Condition: The piece is in good conditions without any problems. Provenance: Purchased in 1980's from a yard sale by the current owner. 150-200$.
