Hello Lovely Person, We have a rug that is about 8x10. We bought it around 2007 on ebay. A co-worker said that they found someone that was going to Iran to buy handmade rugs and selling them. We think it looks handmade. It's time to sell it and we have no idea what to charge.

Hello Bree, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is a beautiful Entirely Hand Knotted Persian Tabriz Carpet made around late 1980's to 2000's. This piece clearly shows some characteristics from Tebriz and Kashan rugs. Since Tebriz can be considered as the most commercialized are for the carpets, I believe it is better to name this piece as Tebriz. Tebriz is a North-western Persian city in Iran. They are heavily producing rugs even nowadays, their tradition of course goes almost a thousand years back. To be able to meet the demand from western market, Tebriz increased it's production throughout the 20th century. As a result the knotting quality decreased over time with the average items, while the quality is still quite high with high-end pieces. Your piece can be considered as an average piece from this period, it is entirely hand woven of course but with a considerably low knot density. For rugs, in most cases we can say that higher the density better the quality. More knots means a better motif rendering on a piece, less knots might mean an unclear and muddy general appereance. Your piece is made as wool on wool, which means both it's pile and knots are made of wool, but it's probably a goat and sheep hair mixture. You could probably sense this with your hands if you touch the piece, some elements in the mixture would feel stiff while some would feel soft. Seems like it has some ware due to use. Has a central medallion on a red base, decorated by flowers. Borders are also decorated by floral patterns. Fringes are probably shortened, these pieces tend to have longer fringes. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: 8 Feet x 10 Feet Condition: Fair condition with some ware due to use. Provenance: Purchased from eBay upon recommendation in 2007.
