Heriz Rugs come from the East Azerbaijan Region of Iran are very particular pieces. Heriz is the name of the village where these motifs and patterns were created. Heriz pieces are known for their durable nature. The wool used in this rug is a lot more resilient than other Persian pieces. This is due to the fact that Eastern Azerbaijan region located near the Mount Salaban has a large copper reserve under them. This causes the drinking water for animals to have slight metal components inside which causes the sheep's wool to be stiff The general decoration of the piece is central, we can easily detcet a central medallion. The medallion is four armed and this is a clasical Heriz motif. Unlike the majority of central Persian rugs Heriz pieces are decorated mostly geometrically. As you can see from the motifs the general decoration is a lot more geometric in comparison to other examples. This is probably due to the Azerbaijani-Turkish affect. We usually observe geometrical patterns in Turkish pieces. The knot density of Heriz carpets are usually very low since they are villager rugs. Their knot density varies between 30-100 KPSI.
