Hello Michele, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Persian Contemporary Oriental Rug made in Oushak Style. The piece dates back to the period from 1960 to 1980. Oushak pieces are actualt native to Turkey but based on the knotting type and the composition we can conclude that this piece was made in Iran likely and less likely in India or Pakistan. The piece resembles a centerless contemporary Oushak pattern with Persian interpretations. The piece was knotted to be look like an antique, the colour palette also confirms the purpose. While the central area was decorated on a dark coral base with use of large scale leaves and Oushak style flowers, the borders were decorated with ram horns and floral motifs on a beige base. The ram horns do usually resemble power and fertility in rugs. The motifs are alligned elegantly and the piece is made with care. The piece was knotted wool on cotton with a high knot density, the pile might include silk and mohair accents as the label on the rug's back says but should be confirmed by closer looks. The motifs are therefore rendered quite clearly. The piece is in good condition without any visible significant problems. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: 8 Feet 8 Inches x 12 Feet 5 Inches Condition: The piece is in good condition without any visible significant problems. Provenance: Purchased in the late 1960’s in Chicago from a Persian carpet seller-shop. Heavily decorated by Contemporary Oushak patterns. 1800-2500$.
