Paradis Spinning Wheel
06 February 2023
Description

Put together with wood pegs and leather, only has nails at the bottom. Marked with "Paradis" on the front, still works. With it were a broken bobbin/(flyer I think its called?) and some other pieces, they are a different type of wood so I don't think they are original to the wheel. The wheel is removable and the front part where the bobbin goes is adjustable. This was purchased from a barn in the 1950s as an antique at the time so I'm not sure the true age of it. 38 inches tall and the wheel is 22 - 23 inches

What does this mean?

Hi Amber,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Spinning wheels, which used to be so romanticized for their Colonial connotations, have long become discarded remnants of American history and bring VERY LITTLE at auction...in fact, they bring so little most auction houses won't take them.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage Colonial Revival style Paradis "Saxony Wheel" spinning wheel
Early-mid 20th Century
Appears to be largely of maple, with treadle-powered drive wheel, base or table raised on three turned legs and stamped 'PARADIS' at one end, with two turned maidens to support bobbin, with one flyer and and other pieces.
38 inches tall overall
CONDITION: appears to be generally in good condition
PROVENANCE: purchased circa 1950 from a barn
$50-75*
