Hello Maureen, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Persian Meshed Rug. The piece likely dates back to the period from 1930 to 1950. The piece has a classical pattern of the Meshed Rugs, Mesheds are all florally decorated like most of the Persian City Rugs. Most of the Meshed Rugs are designed with a central medallion, your piece was also centrally decorated with a medallion. This medallion's interior is also decorated with classical Persian floral motifs. The piec alos has two hanging lanterns, each from both sides of the central medallion. These lanterns are usually decorated more simply but in your pieces decoration we can see that the lanterns were also enhanced by use of a white semi-medallion in between. The piece was knotted on a red base in it's central decoration, also has a outer layer of dark blue within the decoration. The borders of the piece were decorated on a dark blue base. Meshed piece are usually knotted in very large sizes, this piece was also knotted in a large size. The knot density of Meshed pieces are usually lower in comparison to Tabriz or Qum pieces, your piece's knot density is average for a Meshed piece as well. The pile of your rug was wool while the foundation was cotton. The appearance of fringes are confirming the age. The piece is in good condition without any significant problem, some visible fading in colour due to sun exposure through years. Entirely hand knotted.
