Old school wild duck decoy MALLARD signed
08 January 2019
Description

The OLD SCHOOL DECOY series are a signed series of fine aged ponderosa pine wild duck decoys. All are designed and crafted in the old school fashion by a master craftsman. The display box drawer is lined in a dark red leather. The decoy sits in a slotted parallel railing atop the box next to a Winchester shotgun shell casing attached to the box on one side. There are 3 miniature railings on 3 sides of the display box. The decoy is signed RDLewis on the bottom and dated 11/7/79. I believe the production run to be limited to 700.

Provenance

This was owned by my mother who loved duck hunting. I believe the item was purchased in a store that existed at the time who's name is on the ID label which is "The Company Store" San Diego, CA.

Good morning Sydney,

Thank you for your inquiry and for submitting photographs for valuation at Mearto.

Carved and paint-decorated mallard decoy, made by RD Lewis, Missouri, circa 1979

RD Lewis was a skilled carver in Missouri, who is best known for his carousel horses. His decoys were retailed through the Company store and are fairly collectible, though because so many were made there are many in the marketplace today. He often used reclaimed wood, which gives his birds and other carvings a nice patina or color. It appears as though it was later mounted to the box it sits on.
