We have a 22ft x 13ft Kidman Rug. Our family purchased it around 1985. I have an old appraisal from 1985 also. Our knowledge of the rug comes from the 1985 appraisal and our mother’s adamant protection and car of the rug. The 1985 appraisal says the following: - Kidman - Made in Iran - Circa 1910 - Colors: Black, Light Blue, Dark Blue, Medium Green, Ivory and Red

Dating back to the period between 1900-1920. This piece appears to be a masterpiece of the early 20th century. The sizes are only comparable to minority of the early 20th century piece and a high quality majority of the 19th century pieces. Kirman Rugs are one of the most prestigious Persian Rugs of them all. Kirman was a center for Oriental Rugs starting from the 15th century. And Kirman pieces became very popular in Western market starting from the 18th century. This popularity ascended to it’s pique in mid 19th century. We can consider your piece as a last of the kind, as far as we know after this period rugs of this size and quality was produced very rarely for special people or occasions. Colour and motifs of this piece are rendered very successfully, especially the metallic tone of blue is a characteristic Persian colour with origins going back to 14th century. This pattern of your rug has a specific name called “Lattice” with the central field divided by a lattice design giving many small compartments. Although the design is central it is not a central medallion as we see in Tabriz or Isfahan rugs. A rug of this pattern was also exhibited in Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Kirman pieces are almost always knotted by using the asymmetrical knot also known as the Persian Knot. This knot style gives the artist weaver the ability to knot more circular patterns with high precision. The Knot density of your piece is also quite high, likely between 100-120 KPSI. The foundation of this piece is made of cotton while the pile is made of hand loomed wool. In very good condition without faults despite it’s age. Entirely hand knotted.
