Large Wool Rug

9’x6.5’ wool rug. Fringe appears to be horse hair or something similar. I’m purchased it in 1999 and the gentleman just told me it was old. No idea if it’s Turkish, Persian etc…

Hello Debra, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Turkish Cecim Kilim. The piece likely dates back to the period between 1940-1970. Cecim pieces are knotted usually in all villages and the rural areas of Anatolia. This one with it's Scorpion motifs and intense red colours is very similar to the Sivas Cecim pieces, of course it can also be from neighbouring cities of Sivas in Eastern and Central Anatolia. As you can see from the back of the piece as well, the Cecim Kilims have a very different style of knotting. The forming knots of the motifs are left with their extensions visible from the back of the piece. Also very differently, the foundation of the piece is made of goat hair. The piece is knotted wool on goat hair. On the borders, we can see the ram horn motifs as decorational elements. The rest of the piece is decorated with duplicated Scorpion motifs. The base of the piece is an intense red colour while the decorations are made with dark blue and rarely white. The piece is likely a semi-antique piece. The piece is in good condition without any visible problems. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: 9 Feet by 6.5 Feet Condition: The piece is in good condition without any visible problems. Provenance: Purchased in 1999. Heavily decorated by traditional Anatolian Cecim patterns. 850-1200$.
