This silk garment is normally composed by a red satin base with a matching hem which rails in the floor, whose main purpose is to prevent the hem of the clothing from clinging to the feet by making a thick part around the hem. The material is silk brocade which is why it is very heavy, but also one of the most luxurious kimonos. This hand-made multi-colored uchikake is embroided with the traditional Shôchikubai motifs or symbols of longevity, fidelity, integrity and perseverance: various flowers and leaves as well as of cranes and pine trees (kusudama).
