He was born in Port Austin, Michigan and it is assumed that he received some inspiration or training in Paris, France between 1941 and 1943. He is known for his traditional ideal landscape paintings. This particular painting was most likely painted in the 1960s or 1970s. Similar paintings by Cantrell were sold or offered at auction. The estimate is based on auction results.
