Hello Kathy, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knit style and the colours, I concluded that this is a Hand Made Modern Chinese Embdroidery, knitted in the period between 1930-1940. This is made with the classical technique of knitting with a needle and thread. Also some paint was applied on certain points to either write or to render to images more vividly. Lion figures were rendered with amazing care and knitted very properly. This piece could take several weeks to knit if it was processed by a single artist. The lions are depicted in a mood of agression, likely a symbol of power. The figure shows two lions which might be an attribution to unity. On the upper rightern part we can see a classical poem as we do see in ancient Chinese paintings to modern ones. The frame might not be original, even if it is original probably been repaired or restored several times. The rest of the decoration is idillyc and depicts the nature. A lot of brush strokes are visible, these were used to enhance the natural looks of the forest. On the lower right corner we see entirely different trees with differen colours from our main composition. This cliff might represent the mortal life while the further away one represent the afterlife. Two far away pieces of lands as a metaphor. Generally in good condition without visible faults. Entirely hand made. Dimensions: 44 Inches by 28 Inches Condition: Generally in good condition without visible faults. Provenance: It was given to current owner's grandfather as a gift in 1941 by a Chinese general, owner's grandfather served in China during the WWII Heavily decorated by an idillyc scene alongside Lion figures. 250-300$.
