Hello Gina, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Oriental Rug made in Egypt. The piece dates back to the 1990-1996 period. The piece appears to be a silk rug and was knotted silk on silk. There should be further evaluation to authenticate if the silk is natural or not. The piece is decorated by a mixture of Turkish and Persian floral patterns. Egypt has a weaving tradition but this tradition is not seen as silk rugs or heavily decorated rug bodies with complex motifs. Therefore we can say that this piece was produced for souvenir, gift purposes to tourist. The colours of the piece can be considered as too bright and average to low quality industrial colours, therefore the difference with Turkish Hereke, Kayseri or Persian Qum Rugs are significant although the piece adopts it's pattern from these pieces. The piece is centrally decorated which means tehre is a central medallion ont the piece. The medallion was also decorated florally and has two lantern shapes depicted as hanging from both sides. The piece's knot quality is average for a silk piece but the rendering of the motifs appears to be somewhat muddy, this might be due to the thickness of the piece or the knot density. The central decoration was made on an ivory base, while the borders were decorated on a red base. Entirely florally decorated. The piece is in good condition without any visible problems. Entirely hand knotted. Dimensions: Unknown. Condition: The piece is in good condition without any visible problems. Provenance: The piece was puchased in Egypt from a local silk-rug maker in 1996. 800-1000$.
