The appraised work appears to be a framed oil on board landscape painting by American artist Edward Kirkbride Thomas (1817-1906). Originally from Philadelphia, Thomas was a soldier and likely self-taught artist who lived in Minnesota beginning in the 1850s. He routinely painted views of Fort Snelling while stationed at the military fort. He worked at the Minnesota Pioneer, which was the territory’s first newspaper. Several of the artist’s paintings survive and are in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota Historical Society and Sibley House in Mendota. The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples. The appraised work’s subject, medium and condition were taken into consideration in the process of valuation.
