What does this mean?

Hello Michel,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, painting quality and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Painted Chinese Porcelain Ginger Jar, dating back to the period between 1970-1980. This mother of pearl colour of glaze makes the spectator to think that this piece is made of some kind of glass but it is actually a below average quality porcelain, this is the reason of it's likely thin construction. We also do see some bubles on the porcelain which happens during the firing process, this is another indication that thi is a porcelain Chinese Ginger Jar. Usually these type of ginger jars would also have a lid but in your piece's case it is probably lost or advertised without it. The painting quality and the mother of pearl colour composition is classical to 1970's, this colour was all over the average quality production of porcelain during this period.

We can see that the general decoration of your piece is characterized by roses. Roses are depicted in a very western way, this is usually the case for export pieces. The made in China mark underneath your piece also confirms the export theory. The painting quality is very standartized and usually seen on mass produced pieces. The painting style lacks many details of course and the precision is quite very low. Export pieces are intented for gifts and souvenirs, therefore rarely made with care. Generally in good condition without any visible fault except some ware.

Entirely hand painted.

Dimensions: 9 Inches High and 8 Inches of Diameter.

Condition: Generally in good condition without any visible fault except some ware.

Provenance: The owner purchased the same in Hawaii, 1981.

50-80$.
