What does this mean?

Dear Tom,

Thank you for your request. The apprised object is an iron pot made out of cast iron by the producer Carron Company in Scotland. This piece was produced in the 20th century. I attach you a link to the history of this company (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carron_Company).
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 30 to 60 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.

With best regards,
Georg

Thank you for your appraisal. I would be interested to know how you came to the conclusion that the piece was produced in the 20th century. It was my understanding that a piece with a gate mark indicated that the piece was produced no later than around 1880 when casting methods changed.

Dear Tom,

The surface is such in a good condition and the model number in the lid are a hint for a late production date. But you are right that the gate mark was used until 1880. That means that this pot was made in the 19th or more probably in the middle 19th century. This higher the estimate and I want to excuse for my mistake.
An estimation would be between 100 to 200 USD.

Thank you for clarifying. The piece is valuable to me for it's historical rather than it's monetary value.

Dear Tom,

You are very welcome. Art historians like myself appreciate it if a pieces´ art historical value is put in the spotlight, rather then its market value.

With kind regards,
Georg
