The appraised item that appears to be by Pablo Picasso is a gouache on paper that measures 12" (h) x 9" (w). It is a still life depicting (from left to right) a white bouquet in a long vase, yellowish candlelight and a book on a table. It is signed on the upper right, and several stamps from previous collectors appear on the reverse of the work. The condition seems to be very good overall. According to the information provided, it has been exhibited (four times) and is currently shown at the Mid-South Artist Gallery, Bartlett, TN. It is framed and matted, and it comes with a certificate of authenticity.
This work strongly echoes another fully authenticated painting executed in 1937 by Pablo Picasso called "Still life with candlesticks" (Nature morte au chandelier), which, according to several sources, is currently part of a private collection.
The period around 1937 when this particular work was probably executed proved to be challenging for the artist due to conflicts in his personal life and political events in his native Spain. Picasso responded to this turmoil by creating vivid works with complex compositions and objects. The candlelight here probably translates hope and death.
