Hello Andrea, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, material and the technique used, I concluded that this is a Carved Wood Chinese Immortal Bust, dating back to the period between 1930-1970. This piece was carved entirely of wood, likely from a single piece of wood excluding the ears. It is not a representation of Buddha but it is a representation of a Chinese Immortal. Chinese Immortal are a part of the Chinese Mythology and they represent different kind of virtues. The older ones usually represent wisdom, just like your piece. the precision and finishes indicates that there were some modern tools were involved in the carving process. Therefore we can easily date the piece, the varnish colour is also quite peculiar and clearly gives the piece a wax effect. Underneath the piece was not varnished and left as it was by the artist. Upper back parts of the statue has an alabaster look, intended either as a design or due to age. The Chinese Immortals beard, mustache and eyebrows were carved sufficiently. The overall quality is average for the period. Patterns on both sides and the hat of the Immortal depicts the signes of Wisdom. The piece is in good condition with a damage at the lower corner, visible from underneath the piece. Entirely carved from wood. Dimensions: 10 Inches High by 6 Inches Wide Condition: The piece is in good condition with a damage at the lower corner, visible from underneath the piece. Provenance: It was a gift. 200-250$.
