Hello John, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall quality, carving and the composition, I concluded that this is a Wooden Carved Buddha Scultpure made around early to mid 20th century. The piece seems very decorative for interior purposes but I believe it's carving quality and composition is not right for a temple piece. Temple pieces were usually the highest quality Buddha sculptures of all examples. Also, we do rarely see wooden examples excluding the reliefs on the doors. Among these rare piece we usually see an incredibly careful work of art while your pice is done less careful and probably for decorative purposes. Although it is not a temple quality piece it is still very high quality and the carving is splendid. Especially you can admire the master of this work by taking a close look at the feet and hands. Nail shapes are very precise and proportionate. The nose is ver peculiar and unusual for a Buddha from this period, this is the reason why I must include the possibility of this piece being from mid-century. Also the eyebrows, which do seem designed as one, is unlikely for altar pieces in temples. Entirely hand carved. Dimensions: 38 Inches High, 15 Inches Base, 18 Inches from elbow to elbow. Condition: Fair condition with some wear and colour loss due to age. Provenance: Purchased from a neighbour of the owner who was moving out. 700-1000$.
