Bronze Buddha Statue

Bronze standing buddha statue... approximately 27 cm tall. Appears to have possibly had a crack/break repaired at some point. Purchased by my mother in Kabul circa 1970. We have no idea of its age, value or significance and would appreciate any further information about its possible value and how old it is and where it would have come from.

Thank you for sending the images in of your standing Buddha Shakyamuni. It is very interesting to me for a number of reasons. Firstly it has certain features reminiscent of the Mon Dvaravati people who lived across Thailand but also in other areas of South East Asia, in the 7th-11th century. The hair and face remind me of similar Buddhas I have seen, however the treatment of the robes in particular take me more to Northern regions and I do feel this buddha probably originated in Pakistan/ Afghanistan. The key to a precise region lies in deciphering the language/ script on the mandorla. It also feels genuinely old. Looking at the overall style and patina i would estimate it to be from around the 8th-11th Century. This would need to be verified by further study and possibly scientific analysis of the clay core underneath which can be analysed scientifically. If this proves positive and adequate provenance (in the form of documentation to verify purchase dates) can be substantiated I believe it may have the value range stated. I hope that you have found this information useful. Best wishes. Mark J Metro
