Hello Adam, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, knot density and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Knotted Afghan Aqcha Rug, also known as the Afghan Red. Dating back to the period between 1970-1990. They are knotted in Afghanistan's Aq Chah Region located in the Northern part of the country, hence the name. The piece has a very deep and dark composition that would characterize an Afghan Rug. The detail in the Aqcha Rugs can vary but the pattern is almost always one form of repeated columns of "Gul" (Flower) or "Fil Pai" (Elephant Prints) adapted from the Ersari and Turkmen weavers' heritage. We clearly can see that in your pieces decoration Fil Pai pattern was used and each of the chests on the piece inspired by elephant prints. Interiors of these elephant print depictions are of course again decorated florally with many different flower motifs. Almost all Afghans Rugs are seen as Tribal and the low count, density is considerably low. Although the knot density is low, the rugs renders the motifs quite surprisingly good due to the knotting technique. Boteh and star motifs are visible alongside all the border. Boteh figure is likely adapted from Persian rug and kilim pieces. These pieces are highly sought after in the Western market due to their high decorational value.
