Antique Tibetan Scroll

Large, over 5 foot in length several layers of silk & cloth attached to a long wooden pole. Silk panel is deep purple blue with gold floral like designs bordering a blue haired god or deity sitting crossed legged holding a lotus flower in it’s left hand & is surrounded by 10 other vibrantly colored gods or deities? Cloth panel is striped in bold bluish-black, red & beige. The backside contains inscription in red.

Hello Kelly, I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal, Considering the photographs, overall pattern, painting style and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Painted and Made Tibetan Mahakala Thangka Painting depicting Buddha. The piece dates back to the period from 1930 to 1960. The piece is a depicting a Mahakala, Mahakala is protector guardian deity known as a "dharmapala" in all schools of Tibetan or Vajrayana Buddhism. He is depicted in several variations, each with distinctly different qualities and aspects. The painting is seen as an object imbued with the spiritual energy of years of practice and devotion by many guest Lamas and practitioners. A classica depiction of Shakymuni Buddha. Likely Hand painted on a gesso prepared cotton fabric canvas. This can be considered as a sort of altar piece. The piece has tibetan writing in red on it's back. The piece is usually surroundered by Tibetan design fabrics and decorative frames. The piece appears to be in good condition without significant damage. Entirely hand made in Tibet.
