Hi Stephanie, Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. The metal lining suggests this may have carried ice or other precious commodity (too big for tea but caddies have metal linings) to prevent spoilage. I can't find any direct auction comparables but it's a nice decorative thing. Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is: A Japanese lead or tin lined and brass mounted hardwood chest probably late 19th Century Of rectangular section with engraved brass corner mounts to the lid and lower corners, the hinged lid with front handle opening to a lead or tin-lined interior, the front mounted with a cast brass mount, 19 inches high, 27 1/2 inches wide, 17 1/2 inches deep CONDITION: appears to be in good condition with wear commensurate to age and use. PROVENANCE: acquired in Japan in the late 1970s/early 1980s $300-500* *represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary. Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.
