Antique doll 21" with soft leather body
30 January 2022
Description

girl doll 21" long, leather body with leather hinged knees, head and hands are porcelain I think. red hair. could be late 19th century or early 20th century. I can't find any brand marks on it but I don't want to break anything looking.

Provenance

It came most likely from a great aunt (b. 1890s) to my mom (b. 1928) and just was kept wrapped up in a closet in my mom's house.

I can't find anything on the back of the neck lower part of the head. The hair is very intact and I hate to try to get to the scalp on the back of the head. Could you send me a photo of a doll with marks on the head where you think they might be on my doll?

I can't upload a photo but this website has a good description of telling where most dolls are marked. Sometimes they are on the bottom of the feet, but that's only if the feet are porcelain or plastic (not relevant in your case as this has fabric feet).

I really can't find anything. What does it look like to you? Can you give me an estimate as is? I think it is fairly old based on everything I've read about the eyes, hair, and material of the head and hands.

Of course and yes, it's in very good condition for its age. About as valuable as an unattributed doll of this size and age. If the maker were known, it would only be slightly more valuable. You're all set.
