What does this mean?

Hi Alanna,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The "M" mark on the underside of your compote is a rarely seen and belongs to Morimura Bros, which started the Noritake trademark in New York City in the late 19th Century. Because the Noritake company doesn't keep records, there is some debate among ceramics scholars as to when the mark was first used - some say as early as circa 1915, others say as late as the early 1930s. Either way, this is a rarely seen mark.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage Morimura Bros parcel gilt and hand-painted porcelain footed compote
made in Japan, probably 1925-1935)
Of circular section with two small loop handles, the ivory ground centering painted floral decoration, cream border with stylized gilt shell decoration, within a brick-red edge, on a flaring circular foot with brick-red edging. Underside of foot bearing underglaze green "M" mark.
3 inches high, 13 inches wide
CONDITION: this compote appears to be in good condition. Value assumes no chips, breaks, cracks or repairs.
PROVENANCE: inherited
$ 150-250*
