Angkor Wat Painted Temple Rubbing
08 January 2021
Description

Painted temple rubbing of Angkor Wat in Cambodia circa 1970. Framed. No longer produced. Frame is roughly 21.5' x 52'.

Provenance

A former neighbor served in the Vietnam War and visited Cambodia while over there. He bought it as a souvenir. Apparently, they were made from a plaque or relief of some sort outside the temple. Material was applied to the surface, it hardened making an impression of the image, then it was painted and sold. They had to stop making them because the plaque was actually becoming affected. I don't know if the material was wearing out or the gold was wearing off, etc.

What does this mean?

Dear Melissa,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

The presented object appears to be a relief probably made out of carved wood or gypsum with the measurements of 21.5' x 52'. The artwork depicts the center of the famous temple complex of Ankor Wat in Burma. Such pieces were made as souvenirs for tourists and this piece is not signed or can be attributed to a known and listed artist.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 80 to 150 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.

With kind regards,
Georg

There is a similar one on ebay right now for $1895. Why the discrepancy?

Dear Melissa,

Thank you for your email. Such offers on eBay are asking prices that have no connection to actual market prices. I am sorry that you expected a higher estimate, but we adapt our estimates to an actual market situation. Sadly this artwork is not connected to an artist who has sold comparables.

With kind regards,
Georg
